Cancer & Womxn’s Health Committee
Our mission is to empower and support cancer patients and survivors, as well as advocate and raise awareness for women’s cancer research through hands-on community service, leadership, and passion.
-
This semester CWH has a few projects. The first of which is breast cancer awareness infographic that will be on the AMWA Instagram. Additionally we are working on a period product drive collaboration. We are also having two opportunities to connect with current patients, one is a tabling event where people can make origami to give to kids at USCF Benioff Hospital and the second one is writing letters that we will be sending to breast cancer patients.
-
Our committee has hosted multiple fundraisers including a scrunchie fundraiser and a Krispy Kreme fundraiser in which we donated the funds to various organizations such as the Women's Cancer Resource Center and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. We've also made care kits for the UCSF Benioff's children's hospital and we're currently working on an awareness pamphlet so that patients know how to identify symptoms in order to advocate for themselves at the doctor's office.
Childhood Nutrition Education Committee
Our mission is to work with members of our local community to promote healthy lifestyles and nutrition in the hopes of alleviating food insecurity and obesity.
-
Currently, we are creating nutrition packets with educational activities for elementary schoolers and parents to distribute to schools in the Bay Area. We also are continuing our tradition of attending the Saturday Berkeley Farmers Market! People should join our committee if they are interested in working with kids and educating about nutrition in the Bay Area!
-
CNE sets up a table bi-monthly at the Berkeley Farmer's Market with My Plate activities for kids and nutritious, easy, and affordable recipes for families to make at home. In order to get hands-on experience working with kids, we also teach nutrition curriculum at local preschools!
Diversity in Medicine Committee
We seek to raise awareness about health disparities experienced by racial ethnic minority groups and to be their allies in healthcare through mediums of advocacy, education, and community-based projects.
-
This semester, we are going to return to Berkeley High School with more mentorship workshops as well as other opportunities to help work with younger students. We will also be making infographics to spread awareness of important topics within medical racism!
-
Some of our projects include holding STEM mentorship events at local high schools, social media campaigns showcasing the diversity of pre-meds at Berkeley, mapping healthcare access disparities among racial groups, forming a non-profit to donate MCAT prep books and alleviate financial obstacles to medical school, and poster projects on trailblazing women in medicine and minorities’ experiences in healthcare. We also collaborate with other minority-focused healthcare organizations on campus to host networking socials and panel discussions to encourage conversations on how we, as a rather diverse group of future physicians, aim to make a difference in the medical field. This committee provides a space for those passionate about viewing healthcare holistically and advocating for quality healthcare for all, while also cultivating an inspiring community of women with a vision for the future of healthcare.
Gender & Sexual Health Committee
Our goal is to raise awareness and be active allies to women and the LGBTQIA+ community through advocacy projects, community education workshops, and public tabling events.
-
We advocate for the destigmatization of LGBTQ+, Sexual, and Women’s healthcare through advocacy projects, community education workshops, and public tabling events.
-
As a committee, we have created infographics, fundraised for organizations like the Women’s Daytime Drop-In Center, and plan to have future tabling events like handing out free pronoun pins. One of our upcoming events is releasing a biweekly podcast that talks about a wide range of topics where we’ve invited other clubs on campus, physicians, or professionals in the topic’s field to offer their own opinions. GSH is tight-knit, and we emphasize that collaboration is the best way to approach large issues and help in any way we can. From making rice krispies to brownies in our apartments to planning future socials, our committee is dedicated to completing our event goals while forging positive relationships with each other. The positive environment in GSH fosters a creative environment that applies to making Instagram posts for future events to figuring out the best times to table. We welcome absolutely everyone so feel free to stop by one of our events or to come on our podcast!
Mental Health Committee
We strive to destroy the stigma surrounding mental health on our campus and promote better mental health for our fellow golden bears and extended community.
-
We are currently focused on hosting fun de-stress events for students on campus such as painting pumpkins, making care cards for pediatric oncology patients, and more! We will also be hosting collaborations with other organizations on campus. Don't forget about our podcasts and informational slide decks on our podcast instagram: @mindlikeberkeley!!
-
We engage in fun activities such as hosting de-stress events on campus to add positivity to our community; podcasts to educate viewers, raise awareness, and normalize mental health disorders; providing helpful mental health resources on our website; and much more!
